Patek tapisserie and the art of an embossed dial

4 min · 8 February 2026

Look at a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 dial under raking light. The horizontal stripes aren't ink — they're physical grooves, hand-engraved into a brass disc before the deep-blue lacquer is applied.

This is why the dial looks alive under the slightest light change. It's also why it shows every imperfection on the case surrounding it: the dial is a mirror, and a scratched bezel reflects back distorted.

Most owners install protection film thinking about the case. The real reason to install it on a 5711 is the dial. Every scratch on the case bezel sends a smear back to the dial. Keep the case perfect and the dial keeps its tapisserie magic.
