Carbon TPT — the material RM invented watches for
Carbon TPT (Thin Ply Technology) is a composite Richard Mille adopted from the aerospace and sailing industries. Hundreds of layers of carbon fibre, each oriented at a different angle, compressed under heat and pressure into a billet that's then machined into a case.
The result is a watch case that weighs less than a feather, resists impact like steel, and shows a striped marbled grain unique to every individual case. No two RM 011 cases look identical.
It is also impossible to refinish. Steel can be polished. Gold can be reworked. Carbon TPT, once scratched, stays scratched — the grain pattern would be destroyed by abrasion. The only way to preserve the surface is to never let it scratch in the first place.
Our RM 011 film is the only kit we ship with a caseback layer included. The caseback has the most exposed carbon surface and the highest contact with the wrist. Protect that or accept the scratches.
